Chuck Close

“The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and somthing else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.”

Later

Really fantastic article in THE NEW YORKER regarding the history of procrastination and what it tells us about ourselves. A really well written piece that made me re-evaluate the reason I put off important tasks. My favorite concept of "the divided self" and how we fight within and try to tell stories that keep us from achieving our dreams and goals. I've always felt that I had a great deal of time to accomplish things but next thing I know months and years go by and I'm right where I started. Sometimes it isn't just a matter a will but also an issue of self. To read the article please click HERE.

Paulo Coelho

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

T. E. Lawrence

"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible."

The Alchemist

“Everyone on earth has a treasure that awaits him,” his heart said. “We, people’s hearts, seldom say much about those treasures, because people no longer want to go in search of them. We speak of them only to children. Later, we simply let life proceed, in its own direction, toward its own fate. But, unfortunately, very few follow the path laid out for them—the path to their destinies, and to happiness. Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out indeed, to be threatening place."

Rocky Balboa

"Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you're no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow. Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that! I'm always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You're my son and you're my blood. You're the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain't gonna have a life. "

Ideas

Have been reading nothing but positive reviews of the book MAKING IDEAS HAPPEN by SCOTT BELSKY since the book was published a few months ago so I decided to track it down and buy it. Have to say that it was money well spent. Currently a few chapters in and I'm already re-evaluating how I organize and execute my own ideas. The author is behind Behance and 99 percent so he more than qualified to provide advice on putting ideas out into the universe. If you can forgo an expensive dinner I highly recommend you spend your hard earned money on this terrific book.

Gratitude

Had family visiting over the past week and have the say that I felt very fortunate to be surrounded by people that seem to light up when I walk in the room. For all those times that you dwell on your problems and all the things that are going wrong in your life, it is hard to remember just how lucky you are to be born in good circumstances. So today, at his moment and second in time I feel happy within myself for all that I was given.

Stay Positive

Really enjoyed THIS post by JAMES WHITE of SIGNAL NOISE. The talented designer wrote about staying positive during the many ups and downs that creative professionals face. There is a lot of truth to his words, it is hard to have your work rejected but you just have to push forward and realize that there is no failure - only progress. As hard is it is to live but easy to say but people should embrace failure and see it as a stepping stone to success. So as James writes: stay positive.

Failure

This past weekend I was spent in front of the computer trying to develop new screen prints for potential clothing t-shirts or posters. After hours of brainstorming and designing I wasn't able to complete one idea I liked. Do I view this past weekend as a failure - no. I just learned of four approaches that don't work. Still frustrated but still plugging away.
